Archery Glossary: 181 Terms in 14 Languages

Archery vocabulary comes from three places at once. Some words stay English wherever you shoot: plunger, spine, tiller. Some exist in one language only, like the French band or the Spanish fistmele for what English calls brace height. And some, like map crossing, come from the exercises archers actually run on the shooting line. This glossary holds all three kinds in one place.

Entries on the bow, the arrow and the tuning bench are written for the Olympic recurve and follow the logic of our twelve-step tuning guide: what the part or the measurement is, what it changes, and which other setting it knocks on to. Where a term belongs to a step of that guide, the entry links straight to it, and where it is measured by an exercise in the app, it is marked.

The rest is the language of the competition itself, as the rulebook writes it: divisions and disciplines, the lines that cross a field of play, ends and sets and shoot-offs, the officials who call them and the para classes. These are the words that turn up on a start list or in a judge’s ruling rather than on a workbench, and they are given here in the same fourteen languages.

Anti-torque device

Also called anti-rotation device

Any element fitted to keep the bow hand from twisting the riser, from a shaped grip to a rod arrangement that resists rotation. Torque in the bow hand throws the arrow sideways at release, and no plunger setting corrects it.

The string 12

Bow square

Also called brace gauge

The small T-square that clips onto the string. It reads brace height, tiller and the height of the nocking point above square.

Bow stringer

Also called stringer

The cord used to brace and unbrace the bow safely. Levering a recurve by hand or over the knee twists the limbs, and that is how limb alignment gets ruined.

Geometry and settings 10

Bow length

Also called AMO length

The nominal total length of riser plus limbs, 66, 68 or 70 inches for most recurves. It follows from your draw length and it sets the brace height range.

Brace height

Also called string height, fistmele

The perpendicular distance from the string to the throat of the grip on a braced bow. Lower is faster and copies your release faults; higher is slower, quieter and more forgiving.

Centre shot

Also called centring

The left-right position of the arrow relative to the plane of the bow, set with the body of the plunger. It sits deliberately a little outside the string line, not perfectly centred.

Draw length

The distance from the throat of the grip to the nocking point at full draw, to which the AMO convention adds 1.75 inches. It sets both your arrow length and your real draw weight.

Draw weight

Also called poundage

The force needed to hold the bow at full draw, in pounds. The figure marked on the limbs is measured at 28 inches and changes by roughly two pounds per inch of draw.

The arrow 18

Arrow length

The cut length of the shaft, measured from the throat of the nock to the end of the shaft. Cutting an arrow shorter stiffens it, which is why length and spine are always chosen together.

Arrow wrap

Also called wrap

A thin adhesive film wound onto the back of the shaft before the vanes are glued on. It makes refletching clean and carries the archer’s colours, and it adds a gram or so behind the balance point, which pulls FOC down slightly.

Anchor plate

Also called face plate

The small flat piece on a finger tab that rests against the jaw or the teeth at full draw. It turns the anchor from a feel into a contact, and moving it a millimetre moves the whole draw length with it.

Bow bandage

Also called bow strapping

Non-rigid strapping that helps a para archer hold the bow while still letting it move in the hand. World Archery requires it to stay flexible: anything that locks the bow to the arm would make it a support rather than an aid.

Shooting technique 9

Anchor

Also called anchor point

The place on the face where the string hand comes to rest at full draw, usually under the jaw with the string touching chin and nose. It is the rear sight of a recurve: the sight marks are only valid as long as the anchor stays where it was when they were set.

Draw

Also called drawing, full draw

Pulling the string back until the anchor is reached and the bow is at full draw. It is measured as draw length and felt as draw weight, and everything downstream — clicker, sight mark, spine — assumes it ends in the same place every time.

Face walking

Also called face crawling

Setting the distance by moving the anchor up or down the face instead of moving the hand on the string. It keeps the string grip identical for every distance, at the price of a head position that changes with each one.

Nocking

Also called nocking the arrow

Placing the arrow on the string, with the nock clipped at the nocking point and the odd vane pointing away from the bow. It is the one action repeated on every arrow of a session, which is why a nock that fits loosely shows up as scattered arrows rather than as a fault.

Release

Also called loose, the shot

Letting the string go at the end of the shot. For a recurve it is the fingers relaxing and the hand travelling back along the neck, not a decision to open; anything the hand adds at that moment lands on the target as a stray arrow.

Split finger

Also called Mediterranean loose, Mediterranean draw

The finger placement of Olympic recurve: index above the nock, middle and ring below. It puts the draw force either side of the arrow, which is why the nocking point sits above square and the tiller is set positive.

Spotting

Also called watching arrows

Following where the arrows land, either through a scope on the shooting line or for a partner in field and 3D. Reading the group is a tuning skill in its own right: a spotter who calls the pattern saves the archer walking to the target to find it.

Arrow flight 10

Archer’s paradox

The arrow bends around the riser instead of flying straight off the string, and still leaves on the line of aim. It is why a shaft has to be matched in spine rather than simply be as stiff as possible.

Embedded arrow

Also called buried arrow

An arrow driven so far into the butt that its nock is no longer visible on the face. It scores where it entered, but it has to be found and marked before the face is cleared, which is why judges are called before any arrow is pulled.

The pattern the arrows of one end make on the target. Its size is the only reliable measure of a setting; its position is what the sight is for.

Backstop

Also called safety barrier

The netting, bank or wall behind the targets that catches what misses them. It is a safety requirement rather than a convenience, and outdoors it is what makes the overshoot area shorter than it would otherwise have to be.

Call area

Also called staging area

Coach box

Also called trail, layout

The circuit of targets laid out through woodland or open ground for field and 3D archery. Slope, light and vegetation are part of it: two pegs at the same measured distance rarely take the same sight mark.

Dividing line

Also called cut line

The printed line between two scoring zones. A shaft touching it takes the higher score, and when the call is close it is settled at the target by a judge, before any arrow is pulled.

Double face

Also called double spot

Two faces on one butt, used when two archers share a target — typically a mixed team match indoors. Each archer keeps to their own face, and an arrow in the neighbour’s face scores nothing.

Equipment line

Field face

Also called field target face

The black and yellow face used in field archery, with six scoring zones from 6 down to 1 and a spot in the centre. Four sizes cover the distances of a course, and the size tells the archer as much about the shot as the peg does.

Field of play

Also called yellow, the ten ring

The yellow centre of the target face, holding the 9 and the 10. Archers say gold for the colour and ten for the ring, and in match play a single ten is often what a set is decided by.

Inner ten

Also called X, X-ring

The smaller ring inside the ten, marked X. It scores ten like the rest of the ring, but the count of inner tens breaks ties in ranking rounds and in a shoot-off, and in compound it is the ten that counts.

Marked distance

Also called marked course, known distance

A field or 3D target whose distance is written on the peg. The shot then comes down to reading the slope and the light, because the sight mark is already known.

Media line

Also called press line

The line between the shooting line and the waiting line from which photographers and camera crews may work. It exists so that a lens never appears in an archer’s peripheral vision at the wrong moment.

Overshoot area

Also called safety zone

The clear ground kept behind the targets to receive an arrow that goes over them. Its depth is set by the longest distance shot on the range, and no path, road or spectator may be inside it.

Scoring zone

Also called scoring ring

One ring of the target face, worth a fixed number of points. An arrow scores the higher value whenever its shaft touches the line between two zones, which is why the line itself belongs to the zone above it.

Shooting lane

Also called lane

The corridor that runs from a position on the shooting line straight to its target. Lanes are marked on the ground outdoors and they are what makes it safe for archers to walk up to collect while their neighbours stay behind the line.

Shooting line

Also called firing line

The line archers straddle to shoot, one foot either side. It is where the timing signals apply and where an arrow becomes shot: a shaft that falls in front of it may be picked up again, one that lands beyond it may not.

Shooting peg

Also called peg, stake, yellow / blue / red peg

The marker on a field or 3D course that says where to stand for a target. The colours set the distance by division: red for compound at the longest, blue for recurve and traditional, yellow for barebow, longbow and juniors.

Target face

Also called face

The printed sheet with the scoring rings, pinned to the butt. Its diameter goes with the distance — 122 cm at 70 m, 40 cm indoors at 18 m — and the ring widths are what make one distance harder than another, not the distance alone.

Triple face

Also called tri-spot, vertical triple, triangular triple

Three small faces on one butt, shot one arrow each so that arrows cannot damage one another. Indoors they are laid out in a vertical column or a triangle, and the ends must be shot in the order the rules set.

Target archery

Also called target shooting

The discipline shot at fixed distances on a flat range, with round faces and known distances. It is the Olympic form of the sport, and the 70 m round with the 122 cm face is its reference event.

Also called W1 class

The para class for athletes with impairment in all four limbs, shooting from a wheelchair. It has its own equipment rules — a lower draw weight limit, no magnification, and the option of a release aid on a recurve or a compound.

Director of Shooting

Also called DoS

The official who runs the timing and the safety of the line: the whistles, the clock, the signals to shoot and to collect. Nothing happens on the field of play between the DoS’s signals that the DoS has not called.

Jury of appeal

Also called appeals jury

The panel that hears protests against a judge’s decision. It rules on the application of the rules, not on what a judge saw, and its decision closes the matter for the event.

The assistant who stands behind a visually impaired archer, reports where the arrows landed and watches the safety of the line. The spotter may not touch the bow or aim it: the shooting is the archer’s.

Team official

Also called team manager, team captain

A non-shooting member of a delegation — manager, coach, physio — accredited to act for the team. Only a team official may lodge a protest or ask a judge a question on an archer’s behalf.

What is a plunger in archery?

A plunger, also called a berger button or pressure button, is a spring-loaded piston that screws through the riser next to the arrow rest. The shaft presses against it as it bends around the bow, and the spring tension decides how much of that first flex is absorbed. Its body sets the centre shot; its spring is the finest horizontal tuning control a recurve archer has.

What is the difference between brace height and tiller?

Brace height is the distance from the string to the throat of the grip on a braced bow, and it decides how long the arrow stays on the string. Tiller is the difference between the top and bottom string-to-limb measurements, and it balances the two limbs against a draw taken below the centre of the string. Brace height is set with string twists, tiller with the limb bolts.

How do I know if my arrow spine is right?

Shoot unfletched shafts alongside fletched ones at 30 m and read where they land, not the angle they stick out at. For a right-handed archer, bare shafts landing left of the group read stiff and right read weak. If nothing brings the two groups together, or they stay more than a metre apart, the spine bracket itself is wrong and no plunger setting will rescue it.
