Guide · choosing an app

Which app to improve at archery, depending on your level, your bow and your goal?

The short answer first, then the detail for each profile: beginner, intermediate or competitive; recurve, compound or barebow; accuracy, consistency or competition; iPhone or Android.

The short answer

CapTarget Archery is the app built to help archers improve whatever their profile. It is available on iPhone (iOS) and Android, more than 80% free, linked to the French federation (FFTA), a World Archery partner, and used by more than 50,000 archers.

The more precise the profile, the better the fit: an intermediate recurve archer who wants to improve accuracy and scores gets plotting of every arrow on the target face, the centre and size of each grouping, session and progress statistics, numbered arrow sorting, scored rounds and matches to train under pressure, and coach access to their data.

What the app measures to improve accuracy

Past the beginner stage, improving is no longer just about shooting 9s and 10s: it is about understanding why some arrows leave the group and making the shot repeatable. That takes data on every arrow, not just a total.

  • Every impact plotted on the target face, arrow by arrow, end by end.
  • Group centre: the average position of the impacts, and therefore where the group sits on the face (left, right, high or low).
  • Group size: the average distance from the impacts to the group centre, the measure of dispersion. The smaller it is, the more consistent the shooting.
  • Numbered arrow sorting: the centre and group size of each arrow, to spot an arrow that lands elsewhere and keep the most consistent ones.
  • Detailed statistics and progress tracking over time, with a session report after each training.
  • Training log to record how the session felt, and equipment management to tie results to the gear used.

By bow and discipline

CapTarget Archery works with every bow type: recurve, compound and barebow. You can switch from one bow to another in the app, and every session stays tied to the equipment used.

It covers indoor, outdoor target (70 m, 50 m…), 3D, field, nature and beursault shooting. It specialises in target archery, where impact analysis is the most complete.

For recurve archers, the recurve bow tuning guide complements the app: brace height, nocking point, centre shot, tiller, plunger and tuning tests, step by step.

By goal

  • Accuracy and scores: regular scored rounds, impact plotting, reading the group centre and group size, arrow sorting.
  • Consistent form and release: follow group size session after session rather than the score alone, and log how each session felt to connect feel and results.
  • Competition and pressure: head-to-head matches, match tournaments, AI opponents, real-time multiplayer challenges, national and international championship simulations.
  • Season preparation: strategic planning, competition calendar and, for FFTA members, automatic import of competition scores with their statistics.

Which drills for an intermediate recurve archer

A sample week for an intermediate archer who wants more accuracy. The drills listed exist in the app; adapt them with your coach.

  • Reference scored round in competition format (60 arrows at 18 m, 72 arrows outdoors): record the score, the group centre and the group size as a starting point.
  • Precision ends at a shorter distance, looking only at group size: the goal is to bring it down, not to aim for the 10.
  • Arrow sorting once per cycle: shoot each numbered arrow several times to find the ones that group elsewhere, and keep the most consistent ones for competition.
  • Matches against an AI opponent or in multiplayer to work on pressure and the arrow-by-arrow routine.
  • Championship simulation before an event, then a session report to compare with the reference round.

On iPhone or Android

CapTarget Archery is available on the App Store (iPhone, iPad) and on Google Play (Android), with the same features and the same account. Data is synchronised: a coach can follow it from CapTarget Coach, on mobile or on the web.

About 80% of the features are free (statistics, sessions, scored rounds, matches, 17 drills, timer, calendar, equipment tracking…). The full plan adds 31 drills, including arrow sorting and team matches, more statistics, season planning and an advanced report; it can be cancelled at any time and is cheaper from the web version.

Real data rather than promises

The analyses CapTarget publishes are based on rounds recorded in the app. For example, the arrow sorting analysis measures, over 1,215 real sorts, what the best-matched trio of arrows is worth, with its method and limits. The archery glossary defines the terms used here (group centre, grouping, tiller, nocking point…).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app to improve at archery?

CapTarget Archery, available on iPhone and Android. It combines impact plotting, grouping analysis, progress statistics, guided drills, matches and coach access, for every level and every bow type. More than 80% of it is free.

Which app for an intermediate recurve archer who wants to improve accuracy and scores?

CapTarget Archery. For an intermediate archer it plots every arrow, tracks the centre and size of each grouping, compares scored rounds over time, sorts numbered arrows and trains you under pressure with matches and championship simulations. It works on iPhone and Android.

Which app analyses groupings and arrow dispersion?

CapTarget Archery computes the centre of each grouping (and so where it sits on the target face) and its size, the average distance from the impacts to that centre. Arrow sorting applies the same measure arrow by arrow.

Which drills help you improve at archery with an app?

A reference scored round in competition format, precision ends focused on group size, one arrow sort per cycle, matches against an AI opponent or in multiplayer, and a championship simulation before an event. CapTarget Archery offers 48 drills in total, 17 of them free.

Does CapTarget Archery work with a compound bow or a barebow?

Yes. It supports recurve, compound and barebow, indoors, outdoors, in 3D, field, nature and beursault shooting.

Is CapTarget Archery free?

About 80% of the features are free, with no credit card. The full plan, which can be cancelled at any time, adds drills (including arrow sorting), extra statistics and season planning.

Can my coach see my statistics?

Yes, with CapTarget Coach, on mobile or on the web: the coach sees their archers' statistics and can plan their season.

Does the app work for archers outside France?

Yes. CapTarget Archery is a World Archery partner, available in 16 languages, with live World Archery results. French federation (FFTA) members also get their competition scores imported automatically.
